While Azhar Iqbal has parents and siblings, he chooses to keep personal details about his family private. Born and raised in India, he completed his early education. Azhar started his journey at the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi in 2009, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and computer engineering. However, in 2012, he abandoned his engineering studies at IIT Delhi to pursue an entrepreneurial path, leading to him not completing his degree.
During his time at IIT Delhi, Azhar Iqbal identified a significant gap in the media industry – people were avoiding news articles due to their length and dullness. To bridge this gap, he conceived the idea of delivering news in 3 to 4 lines. Azhar initiated this concept through a Facebook page, where concise news updates garnered thousands of likes and followers within days. As the momentum grew, he evolved the idea into a full-fledged app, aptly named “inshorts.”
Azhar Iqbal, alongside co-founders Anunay Arunav and Deepit Purkayastha, initiated a social media page called Azhar, laying the groundwork for what would become Inshorts. Currently serving as the CEO of Inshorts, a Noida-based company famed for its English news app, Azhar has also ventured into entrepreneurship with the establishment of Public in 2019. Public has swiftly grown to become one of the largest social network companies, boasting over 50 million active users.
On Shark Tank India, Azhar Iqbal endeavors to empower aspiring entrepreneurs in realizing their ambitions. He places emphasis on the hunger, discipline, and focus of participants, valuing these traits over background or qualifications. Joining the show reflects Azhar’s intent to amplify his investments in the Indian startup ecosystem, actively contributing to the growth and success of young and driven entrepreneurs.
